At the united nations summit in 2000, 189 head of the government promised to end poverty by 2015, they signed the millennium declaration promising to ‘free men, women ,and children from the dehumanising condition of extreme poverty’’ committing developed and developing countries alike to Eight Millennium Goals MDGs.
- Eradicate extreme poverty/hunger.
- Achieve universal primary education.
- Promote gender equality/empower women.
- Reduce child mortality.
- Improve maternal health.
- Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria &other diseases.
- Ensure environmental sustainability.
- Develop a global partnership for development.
One might think that achieving all of the goals by 2015 is the main responsibilities of the politicians and the government, and that there are little you can do to assist. Nothing could be further from the truth. To achieve the goals, the world needs everyone, young people, aids activists, religious leaders, environmentalist, unionist, civil society organizations and women’s rights activists, everyone concerned about our future to work together and make sure the goal become a reality.
MDGs aren’t the Gvt, commitment to the UN but they are commitment to their people including the youth. The MDGs are global in their scope but targets & indicators can be tailor-made to shorter time scales, higher the targets, local circumstances.
Young people all around the world are making their major contribution to meet these goals but there is more need to get involved. Youth have to be part of the global movement against poverty because its would and our future.
Those of us who live in the developed countries should make sure our govt live up to their commitment on goals 8 (higher quality aid, fairer trade rules and providing more debt relief to developing countries)
Those of us from the developing countries should focus on making their govt to achieve the first seven goals. Govt, must be accountable for meting the MDGs but other actors play critical roles to accelerate the progress and remind the commitments. Youth make (15-28) up to 1.2 M global human capital highest proportion in Asia. Youth are the ones who inherit results of what today are actions are? Today’s development challenges are actually the youth challenges. If the challenges aren’t met today, youth would bear the consequences too. As we live now in globalised world, challenges in one country becomes other’s responsibilities to support
The main problem is to achieve the MDGs is the political will in the politicians and streamline of the political stability in a country. Most of the countries are lacking political stability in the way of meeting these goals.
Education gives a strong voice to youth in the society and creates the opportunities and choices that allow them to lift themselves out of poverty. Many young people are actively working in bringing primary education to disadvantaged children stay in school and complete their primary education. In many cases children in developing countries are forced to drop out to support their families. Governments also need to eliminate school fees and uniforms build school buildings close to the houses and hire more female teachers to achieve the G2.
Young people need to be leaders in the fight to end the discrimination against women. But ending this discrimination is not the duty of women only we nee men to join this fight as well. A cricket match can’t be played with half of the team members only. A match must have its full team members needed to be played in the ground. Today it is sure that we can’t cent meet these goals with the efforts of men only in any country. It is must that women who make half of the population ration must abreast of men and keep shoulder to shoulder to men in all social activities to meet and achieve these goals. Young people can work for gender sensitizations programs and act as counselors and mentors for their younger peers on the issues of gender equality, sexual and reproductive health and family planning. It is quite natural that if young people start discussing what is going on around them, then the next step is the finding out and thinking about the answer and solution because we need to advocate our young people today. Our future depends on their health and well being.
Youth must have their positive contribution to the environmental sustainability for the simple reason that it affects their lives and future as well. Young people can increase environmental awareness and activism in their own communities through formal and informal education. They can use and get he help for the media to increase awareness campaign for common men in our society. Media can play an important role for the youth environment program and awareness in ant society. It is very important that youth must be given importance in decision making process and their fresh ideas should be taken into confidence and consideration in social program and activities because environmental sustainability is especially relevant to youth today. In the mere decade or two it is our generation that will suffer from the disastrous consequences of air and water pollution.
Unfortunately most of the people in our country don’t have ample knowledge about the MDGs. So it is the job of youth in Pakistan to educate them and let everybody know why these goals are important to us. People have to realize that our government had made promise to make better world to everyone. It is now the responsibility of the youth and volunteers in Pakistan to sensitize these issues and force the government to work and make the utmost for achieving these goals for our future.
Here are some recommendations for awareness campaign for meeting MDGs.
Participate in discussion.
Youth can discuss the MDGs and make the people realize about it by discussing these goals with friends, families, organizations and community people.
Through MDGs brochure and post cards. It is very easy to make the post cards and brochure and send to friends and other people around us. It can be distributed in schools and colleges for the sensitizing the MDGs. This would have its very positive impact on all the members of the society.
Create school group and assembly.
This can be done be finding like minded people at schools and colleges or the assembly of the school and college can be used for this proposes. Young people can take the administrators into confidence and use the meeting hall in schools and colleges for the awareness session about the MDGs.
Publish article and organize public meeting/workshop on the goals in your community. Media can be used for publishing article and create artistic piece for any newspapers, magazines. We can find many places where youth can exchange ideas on how the goals can affect our lives and what we can do to meet these challenges and goals.
Voices of youth are more heard today actions by youth are critical to shape the future of a nation. Youth must not limit their actions to promoting 8 goals but they must take concrete steps for involvement and offering support for its implementation and stress the Government to establish a department to monitor the level of MDGs achievement/implementation in our country. There must be dialogue with the Government for partnership aimed at achieving the MDGs. A series nationally focused youth activities should be catalyzed within the country. The goal of this campaign should be to raise awareness about MDGs and youth involvement. This campaign includes national conferences
with school age group, essay/debate contest and coordination with media. This campaign should be coordinated globally for strong communication of their results internationally. Programs for engaging students in identifying/ implementing ways to make their school/homes more sustainable by all forms of education. Youth play an important role in the development of a society so it is entirely essential that government should up to date national youth policy with the involvement of youth.
